GREELY — Seven hundred heartbroken kids at a rural Ottawa school were all smiles Thursday knowing they will be getting their play structures back.
Students at Castor Valley Elementary School had one play structure taken away for safety reasons and the only remaining one destroyed by an arsonist last September. The kids then launched a petition drive pushing the school council into a vigorous fundraising effort to replace them.
To the cheers of students, the school council announced Thursday it had raised the $90,000 needed to build one play structure for junior and intermediate students and another for primary students.
The yearlong fundraising effort came to a swift end this week after Ottawa fitness guru Tony Greco read about the school’s plight in The Citizen and donated the final $10,000 through his Foundation to Fight Obesity in Children.
The play structures should both be in place in time for the first day of school in September, less than a year after the arson, said Heather Wilson, chairwoman of the school council.
“It will be a great way to start the year,” she said. “The plan was to try to raise the money this year, but it was an incredibly big goal to do in one year so I am just overjoyed that we have been able to achieve this in this time frame.”
Greco personally delivered the cheque, saying his charitable foundation to fight childhood obesity could fulfil its goals by helping to keep kids at Castor Valley active. He said he became concerned when he read that the school was struggling to raise funds for something as basic as play structures.
“I just can’t see how these kids can go through life not able to go out there and play and really enjoy that experience that I did when I was a child,” said Greco.
